On behalf of the Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) and in close cooperation with the Länder, the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen, ZfA) of the Federal Office of Administration supports educational work abroad. Worldwide, about 140 German schools abroad, most of which are run by private organizations, receive personnel and financial assistance from the ZfA. Apart from that, the ZfA provides assistance to approximately 1.100 other schools in the respective educational system where the German Language Certificate (DSD) of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany can be acquired.
About 2,000 teachers are employed at German schools abroad around the world. During their employment abroad, they receive support in organizational, pedagogical and staff-related matters from the ZfA. Moreover, the ZfA and the Länder are responsible for the DSD. The ZfA is competent for the design and the evaluation of the examinations, overseeing their distribution and implementation at the accredited DSD schools.
With its work, the ZfA achieves the following goals of the cultural relations and education policy in more than 90 countries: contact with the culture and society of the host country, providing schools for German children abroad, promoting German language, as well as enhancing the attractiveness of Germany as a location for higher education and business.
