What are the objectives of the EES?
The objectives of the EES include:
- Increasing the efficiency of border checks by systematically calculating and monitoring the length of authorised stays for third-country nationals entering and leaving the member states for short stays
- Enabling the automation of border checks for third-country nationals and thus abolishing the manual stamping of passports
- Contributing to the better identification of third-country nationals who have been refused entry and residence or who have stayed in the Schengen area for too long (“overstayers”) and, if necessary, the initiation of appropriate measures
- Combatting identity fraud and the misuse of travel documents
- Supporting the realisation of the objectives of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)
