Together into the future - First annual PASCH conference in China

Date 2016/06/14

A milestone in the German-Chinese Year of Student and Young People’s Exchanges was the first annual conference of the PASCH initiative, organised by the Education Ministry of the People’s Republic of China on 24 May. It brought around 250 representatives of Chinese PASCH schools and education authorities together with the partners responsible for PASCH on the German side.

At the invitation of the Chinese Education Ministry, the representatives of the 68 Fit schools supported by the Goethe Institute and the 49 schools supported by the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen, ZfA) travelled to Beijing to discuss the further development of the PASCH programme and future promotion of the teaching of German in national middle schools with the official representatives of the authorities, the German Embassy, the Goethe Institute, the German Academic Exchange Service and the ZfA.

The three specialist ZfA advisers working in China – Jörg Drenkelfort, Chengdu, Dr. Andreas Wolfrum, Beijing, and Gundula Meyer-Oehring, Shanghai – were pleased to have such a good opportunity to present the DSD programme in detail to the top level of the education authorities and to develop the network of PASCH stakeholders in China.

Outstanding cooperation

In their presentation "The DSD programme in China – Summary and perspectives", they attributed the current success of the programme to the outstanding cooperation between all PASCH stakeholders, the varied professional development courses for Chinese teachers of German, the wide range of measures in place to motivate students, excellent coordination of study, grant programmes, ‘taster’ study visits and, last but not least, school student exchanges that are working well.

2016 is the German Chinese Year of Student and Young People’s Exchanges, for which the motto is: "Exchange, Friendship, Future".

The "Schools: Partners in the Future" (PASCH) initiative has created a network of over 1,800 schools worldwide in which German has a particular importance. PASCH is an initiative of the Federal Foreign Office in collaboration with the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad, the Goethe Institute, the German Academic Exchange Service and the Pedagogical Exchange Service of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK). PASCH is intended to develop lively, long-term links with Germany. The aim is an international learning community spanning the world, which encourages schools, teachers and their students to organise exchanges with one another and to work together through the German language.
