Numerous foreign documents are found in Germany each year. The service point receives passports, identity cards, driving licences, student cards and all other kinds of documents and returns them to their owners in Germany via the competent foreigners authority or a diplomatic representation of the country of origin.
Identification documents of nationals of countries requiring a visa are included in the database on found documents. The information contained in these documents and the photographs are stored. The biometric identification of photographs allows found documents to be matched to paperless foreigners and their identity and citizenship to be established.
To this end, police stations and foreigners authorities can check digital photographs of the people concerned against the database on found documents using the register portal of the Federal Office of Administration or via an e-mail enquiry.
