How to apply for an apostille to be affixed to a Certificate of Good Conduct or an extract from the Central Business Register...
... for submission in a country that has acceded to the Hague Convention.
Please note that the Federal Office of Administration is responsible for issuing apostille solely for certificates issued by German federal agencies (federal ministries, Federal Office of Justice, federal courts, etc.)! It is not responsible for affixing apostille to official registry or court documents, or documents issued by state or local authorities or the German Patent and Trademark Office (which is responsible for issuing apostille for its own documents).
The website of the Federal Foreign Office provides a list of countries for which apostille can be issued.
a) are resident in Germany, submit your application to the responsible registration office
b) are resident outside Germany, submit your application directly to the Federal Office of Justice.
for a Certificate of Good Conduct for submission outside Germany. Please indicate the country in which you wish to submit the Certificate of Good Conduct.
There is no requirement to make payment in advance of receiving a Hague Convention apostille, nor is it possible to make payment in advance!
Please make sure that your letter to the Federal Office of Justice contains the following information:
After approving (by signing and stamping) the Certificate of Good Conduct, the Federal Office of Justice will send it to the responsible office of the Federal Office of Administration (Division ZMV II 6 2.1). The Federal Office of Administration will affix an apostille to the Certificate of Good Conduct and send it, solely on a cash-on-delivery basis, to the address in Germany which you previously provided to the Federal Office of Justice.
In the event that you receive only a computer-generated Certificate of Good Conduct (not bearing a signature or official stamp), please return this to the Federal Office of Justice to be signed and stamped. You must indicate the country in which you intend to submit the apostilled Certificate of Good Conduct.
If you urgently require the Certificate of Good Conduct and wish to collect it from the Federal Ministry of Justice (the relevant office for this purpose is only in BONN) either in person or via a person or courier service authorised by you to collect the document (this requires a power of attorney!), you (or the authorised person or courier) may then call in at the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne (address below) in order to have the apostille affixed.
You may then take the apostilled Certificate of Good Conduct immediately away with you. The time required to carry out this on-the-spot process is around 15 to 45 minutes (depending on customer volume and the number of documents). The apostille fee must be paid at our office by EC card or in cash.
